In honor of a sweet New Year, we taste tested three different kinds of apples:
Red Delicious,
Granny Smith, and
Ginger Gold. We voted for the apple we liked best, and graphed our findings. Red Delicious came in first, followed by Ginger Gold, and Granny Smith. We explored the different parts of an apple: core, stem, seeds, skin, and talked about the three colors apples are commonly found: red, yellow, and green. We decorated our classroom tree with an apple of our choice. Each child stated one fact about apples and we wrote it on their apple. We then used tissue paper, to create an A-B-C-A-B-C pattern: red-yellow-green-red-yellow-green. We are working hard at building our fine motor skills so we will have a lot of strength for writing properly with a pencil. If you feel that your child's fine motor skills are weak, at home, clay is stronger than Play-Doh and will strengthen your child's muscles. Also, in the bath-tub you can have your child use sponges, and fill buckets full of water. Toys such as Legos are helpful as well.
While discussing Yom Kippur, we brainstormed different ways we can be better individuals at home, school, and in our community. We have so many helpful students! We ended our very first week with a special treat that we made ourselves, apple-pudding cake. Each child had an opportunity to put in an ingredient into our mixture. Last week we sent home two Scholastic Weekly Magazines. We even had an opportunity to use scissors to create our own book. We will be practicing and using scissors a lot this school year!
This week is a short one. We will be decorating the Sukkah, that we watched being built. Each child selected their favorite fruit. We will be painting, stuffing, and lacing these fruits and hanging them up for all to see in our Sukkah. If you can, please bring in your child's favorite fruit on Tuesday, September 21.
