Writer's Workshop

Before winter break we launched our first ever Writer's Workshop.  For our first book, each student selected a topic that interests them.  They were asked to select a topic that they are familiar with.  Rule number one of writing: write what you know.  For our first experience, each student is working one-to-one, as we stretch out words, write the sounds that we hear, use a thumb space between words, and a period at the end of a sentence.

Big I, little i. What begins with I?

The winter season will officially be here this week!  With the change in weather, its hard to believe that it truly isn't winter just yet. We will be spending a lot of time learning about ice cream.

This week, we have school Monday-Thursday.  Winter break will take place from Friday, December 24th until January 3rd!

This week, Jericho is our special Superstudent, serving as a sample of what is expected during your child's Superstudent week.  I hope you find this to be a wonderful experience! **Please leave a positive comment about our class mascot, Jericho!** Comments should be posted no later than Friday of each students' Superstudent week.  For Jericho, comments will be made available until Friday, December 17. Directions on how to leave a comment:  Click "Comment" at the bottom of this post Type in the text box your message of encouraging words honoring the Superstudent. "Comment as" box click "Name/URL" and type your child's first name.  First names only.  Family members are encouraged to leave comments for their children too! Click "Post Comment".  This website server usually asks for "Word verification" which will ask you to copy a specific code.  Type the exact code that you see and click "Post Comment" again.  Your comment will not be posted right away, as I have set privacy to comments.  This means that in order for your comment to be viewed by the public, I must confirm it first, so if you do not see your post instantly, that is why.  An example of why this is done is to protect your child's privacy: such as if someone were to accidentally type another child's last name.

This week we will continue our journey with gingerbread people.  We have read many different versions of this story and will now place a focus not only on perspective but on the houses in which they live in.

...This will tie into some literature on The Three Little Pigs.

We are in the process of creating our own gingerbread stories and decorating our class bulletin boards.

Long Island Puppet Theater and Museum

We had a lot of fun meeting Elmo and his friends today.  Not only did we see a great show, we also learned a lot about puppets.

This week we have been learning all about the letter Gg.  New games have been brought into our classroom that incorporate letters, letter sounds, and using that information to identify objects on a game board.

We have begun a unit on gingerbread people.

Super, Super Students!

Super Student week is coming!  We can't wait to celebrate this special time with you and your child.  Please sign up for the Friday that works best for your schedule.  A sign up sheet has been posted outside our classroom.

Hanukkah

What an exciting time to celebrate!

Hanukkah is coming!

We will be learning all about this special holiday through games, songs, and special activities.  We will be opening up our classroom to a maximum of 2 special guests per child for a holiday celebration.  Our class will be singing a selection of holiday songs followed by working in centers.  Those that plan to attend will be running our class centers, in which each child will have an opportunity to go from one activity to another.  This is an opportunity for you to see how your child can work independently and interact with their peers.  We are looking forward to having you in our classroom to celebrate on Monday, December 6, 2010.

I am Thankful, I am Thankful. Yes I Am!

Last week we spent a lot of time preparing for our special Thanksgiving Festival.  We created invitations, incorporated math to create turkeys, and baked corn muffins for the show -- we even made butter!  We re-beaded our necklaces, created wampum belts for those that wanted to add to their costume, and designed our headpieces and robes.
