Big J, little j. What begins with J?

This week we brainstormed different words that begin with the letter Jj.  Every week we practice writing a new letter using our own personal whiteboards.  We practice writing our new letter of the week, and review letters that we learned previously.

Monday, jig-saw pieces will be sent home of your child's name to be matched and put in order.  We love solving puzzles!

This week, we have been measuring Buddy, our turtle that grows day by day as it is placed in water.  I wonder how big he will get?

Letters to Lions

Lions are in danger of extinction across Africa.  We want to help save the lions, and let African leaders know how important lions are to us, and kids everywhere. Today we each illustrated a picture of lions and how we would like for them to be taken care of.  As a class, we will be writing a letter that we will be sending to Washington DC and we are so proud that we are able to make a contribution to help save lions.

Did You Know?
• An adult lion's roar can be heard up to five miles away.
• Unlike other cats, lions have a tuft of hair at the end of their tails.
• Lions are the only cats that live in groups, called prides.  Generally, lions stay in groups of 50 or more.
• There used to be 450,000 lions in Africa 60 years ago, now there are probably as few as 20,000 remaining.

Writer's Workshop

Before winter break we launched our first ever Writer's Workshop.  For our first book, each student selected a topic that interests them.  They were asked to select a topic that they are familiar with.  Rule number one of writing: write what you know.  For our first experience, each student is working one-to-one, as we stretch out words, write the sounds that we hear, use a thumb space between words, and a period at the end of a sentence.

Big I, little i. What begins with I?

The winter season will officially be here this week!  With the change in weather, its hard to believe that it truly isn't winter just yet. We will be spending a lot of time learning about ice cream.

This week, we have school Monday-Thursday.  Winter break will take place from Friday, December 24th until January 3rd!
